Help – Channel 4, 9pm Thursday 16th September 2021 – this is what I take from it and how I see the reality of our system.

I was nearly in tears while watching ‘Help’ on channel 4 (Thursday 16th September 2021). It was emotional to watch but a true depiction of what was going on at that time. The whole of the Corona Virus lock down (basically 2020) was extremely cruel. The amount of people that died due to the virus and other things was soul destroying to watch. The system has always been cruel to those that are vulnerable but last year it was on display for all the world to see. I watch user created content on TikTok. There’s this one that documents their Mum’s battle with dementia. It has recently got extremely sad because she can no longer remember her children and thinks her daughter is her own mother (her mother died 20 years ago). The way they look so lost is heartbreaking. It’s also heartbreaking in a different way the way her face lights up when she sees her daughter (who she thinks is her mother). Her deterioration was made quicker by the lock down because she couldn’t see any of her family. That is important to someone who has memory loss whether it is due to Dementia or Alzheimer’s. It’s such a cruel condition without the added impact of the last year. Then the carer in this program got in trouble for trying to something good for her client that she took out of the care home. The part she said towards the end was true to life and the politicians of this country should listen to those words and look what is going on. The way our system is currently doesn’t need to be, whether it is during covid or through normal times. There are things that could be done so differently. We have to learn the lessons from things that have gone completely wrong in relation to the care of vulnerable adults etc and the welfare of people in general within the UK.
