The materialistic season is upon us….

I think it’s hard to escape the knowledge that it is Black Friday today. The adverts on television were either for Black Friday or Christmas tonight. I feel like our society has become too materialistic. It’s all about having objects. I see no one giving a damn about others any more. Caring about people within our society has gone completely out of the window and been replaced with some crazy notion that possessions make us who we are to the point where they matter the most. I think it is sad. It seems that no one thinks about each other anymore. I have clothing that I’ve had for many years. I don’t go out to replace things until I have truly worn out a piece of clothing or footwear. I have a pair of Jeans from when I was a teenager and a thick coat which is great for the cold winters from back then. They still are okay and I like them so I see no point in updating my wardrobe when I see deals on things like Black Friday and Christmas. I need more slippers because they’re falling apart but I’m not going to keep buying items of clothing unless I’m replacing bits that are falling apart.

I just feel like society has gone passed the point of return when it comes to attitudes that it has adopted. There are individuals trying to be materialistically better off than each other. Eventually it becomes about who spends more on a higher specification car or some other large purchase. These are supposedly fully grown adults but their actions seem quite immature. I will buy something if I like or need it. I’m not going to ever buy something just because it’s more expensive or a better quality than someone else purchased. This will just lead people into a spiralling never ending circle of stress having to keep the behaviour going long term to try to outdo each others purchases. As I say every year when it comes to Black Friday and Christmas… don’t be fooled by these deals or discounts because money is getting harder to obtain either through working or the welfare system (if you’re not able to work because of a medical condition). It will only leave you in a financial mess if you start participating in a lot of these discount sales.

Brexit is breaking the country (UK for our international readers) and we can’t be sure that after our exit bill there will be enough left to support us as British citizens (NHS etc). This country is already technically in debt which is why it’s clawing back as much as it possibly can get from those that have to rely on the welfare state. We can’t trust our system to financially support us. We have to be careful with our money. Save a bit from every payment just in case. I did this when I knew that Disability Living Allowance was ending because I knew Personal Independence Payment was probably going to deny me under the new criteria unless it went to appeal which takes months.
