Why can’t everything just be peaceful or even logical in this society?

I was watching the news (which is a really awful idea if you are already in a fed up mood and are not looking forward to the week to come) earlier. I’m so sick of the crap which is going on in our society. Let’s face it, Brexit won’t ever come to a proper negotiation. Theresa May looks like a female version of Mr Burns from The Simpsons. I’m not into politics, but even I can see that there won’t ever be a deal between the EU and the United Kingdom. Then there are Anti-Semitism happening against the Jewish population. The Jewish population have been attacked and treated horrendously throughout history. And for what? It stems from what is written in a book that everyone religious takes as stating true events. I’m not religious, but seriously, I’m sure that going from a book seems ridiculous to any logical thinking person.

None of us were around when books like the Bible were written. We have no idea whether they are an accurate portrayal of events or even if any of those things even happened. Before someone starts accusing me of being an Atheist, this isn’t what I’m being here. I’m merely saying that we shouldn’t take everything we read as gospel. We can’t prove that events happened as they were recorded. We already know from our own lives that not everyone is honest in the way that they record events. We know from Psychology that what one person perceives is not the same as someone else. As writers, we all write our accounts differently based on our own bias. The person/persons who contributed to religious books most likely had their own bias against certain groups of people etc.

Society needs to take a step back and see exactly what we’ve been doing for years due to religion etc. We are making judgments about groups of people that we do not know personally by what is written in official books. History may be different from what is written. We can’t prove it either way because none of us was alive when these things were written. Therefore, how is it right to judge and set down our morals of what is right or wrong by these texts. The future needs to be togetherness, rather than the divide which has been caused by religious texts and teachings. I know that it is hard for modern Jews to forgive what the German’s did to their past relatives during the war. However, we are not the same generation as those. Our ancestors do not define who we are today. The world has changed a lot since those times. I agree that the modern world is not a positive place. It doesn’t have to be that way though. We can pull together and give up all that divides us because we really don’t know the truth of what happened way back before we existed.

  1. Sad truth is that divide and conquer is a useful tactic for some people so they’ll always pursue it. Religion is one means, though it could be argued that some people can become “religious” about any given subject; usually something political, after making it as divisive as possible. And there’s always some small and vulnerable group whose fault it is: Jews, gays, the disabled, autistic people, trans people, people who are the wrong colour or born on the wrong side of an arbitrary border, or have the wrong accent… etc.

There’s that phrase that people who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Sometimes I wonder if we, collectively, have learnt anything at all. But in spite of that I remain an optimist. Things generally get better even if we do hit the odd pothole along the road. And I feel more optimistic the less I watch the news.

    1. I’d like to see others think for themselves and question things, rather than following the opinions of others blindly which has been written down over the years.

      1. I agree. People can still take positive influences of stuff but that doesn’t mean blindly and unquestioningly following it; and actually that trait seems to nearly always result in negative influences, whatever “it” is. Within reason, it matters less to me what somebody’s opinion is as long as they’ve actually thought about it and why it matters; and those opinions tend to be less fixed and dogmatic anyway since such people tend to be amenable to reviewing them. It’s the rigid “because it’s right and it’s right because it’s right!” line of reasoning that does my head in.

I have my own beliefs but my viewpoints are not completely set in stone: because if that were the case I’d be incapable of learning anything. Which would suck. I don’t claim to be good at it, but at least the intent is there.

      2. Some just won’t be open minded enough to consider points of view that go against their beliefs.

  2. Actually, now that I think about it, you’re right: she *does* look like a female Mr Burns. I’ll be going to bed with that thought and will have nightmares. D:

  3. Thank you. This Autistic Jew appreciates knowing that there are still sane people in the world. Life is very different now than 2000-4000 years ago. The rules evolve with society. The bible also says, “Treat your slaves well.” Nothing about abolishing slavery, although just about every decent person agrees that slavery is an awful thing and should not occur. Besides, didn’t Jesus say, “Love your neighbor?” (Yes, yes he did).

    1. No one seems to think logically nowadays. It’s really irritating to me. It’s a book causing hate. Maybe the writer had a thing against Jews. We can’t prove whether certain things occurred or not. We live in a modern society and we have to adapt to that. Ancient views will not create a progressive society. We need to be progressive with the changes that have happened over the years.
